Tom Nagel on Panpsychism vs Neutral Monism

Last month I was involved in a fantastic conference: the 26th annual meeting of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness. I think it went really well, and some parts got a fair amount of mainstream coverage, with varying degrees of accuracy.

Typical philosophers. They’ve been arguing about this for a long time. God created man, male and female. God made them conscious. They were aware of their surroundings. They were aware of God, their creator. They were told what they could and could not do, what they should learn and what they should not learn. The female was fooled into doing what they were told not to do. She was “beguiled” by the “serpent”, the “great dragon”, the “lord of the life-force”, the “prince of the power of the air”. Her consciousness was corrupted by the “prince of darkness”, the “fallen one”, Lucifer. She talked the male into doing this too. For this they were forced out of the “Garden of God”, an “Earthly Paradise” that no longer exists on earth.
