Machine ethics: The robot’s dilemma — Boer Deng | Nature

Posted by in categories: ethics, robotics/AI

“Advocates argue that the rule-based approach has one major virtue: it is always clear why the machine makes the choice that it does, because its designers set the rules. That is a crucial concern for the US military, for which autonomous systems are a key strategic goal. Whether machines assist soldiers or carry out potentially lethal missions, ‘the last thing you want is to send an autonomous robot on a military mission and have it work out what ethical rules it should follow in the middle of things’.”

IBM Announces Computer Chips More Powerful Than Any in Existence

Posted by in categories: computing, electronics

IBM’s newest computer chips contain seven-nanometer transistors. As points of comparison, a strand of DNA is about 2.5 nanometers in diameter and a red blood cell is roughly 7,500 nanometers in diameter.

Lone Wolf Terrorism Prospects, a new book by a Millennium Project Team, Assesses the Likelihood and Strategies to Address this New Security Phenomenon

Posted by in category: futurism

Lonewolfcover

Lone Wolf (LW) terrorism is on the rise around the world but it can get a lot worse when self-motivated bad guys make weapons of mass destruction in their kitchens or bio-labs. Could 100,000 People be Killed in a Single Lone Wolf Attack? When? Where? And How Could this be Prevented?

In a recent study, half of an international group of security and other experts forecasted that a single individual could kill 100,000 people or more in a single attack by 2050. Or not: the other half of the panel said such an event might happen after the turn of the next century or never.

For the First Time an AI Machine Identified Galaxies All on Its Own

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, space

Researchers in the UK have developed a computer that can scan outer space and classify galaxy types on its own, without any human help. This image recognition AI could help develop robots that can “see” better on their own, possibly helping doctors spot tumors or airport security spot firearms.

“The issue is that robots are really good at doing the same thing over and over again, but when a task calls for flexibility of any kind, it’s almost always easier to have a human do it.” Read more

Pluto’s Odd Dark Spots Continue to Puzzle Scientists (Photos)

Posted by in category: space

The images reveal a great deal of variation and complexity across Pluto’s surface — including the four large dark patches near the equator first spotted by New Horizons late last month. “This object is unlike any other that we have observed,” New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said during a news briefing today (July 6). New Horizons captured the new photos last Wednesday (July 1) and Friday (July 3), shortly before suffering a glitch that sent it into a precautionary “safe mode” on Saturday (July 4).
