Google’s artificial intelligence computer ‘no longer constrained by limits of human knowledge’

Posted by in categories: entertainment, robotics/AI

The computer that stunned humanity by beating the best mortal players at a strategy board game requiring “intuition” has become even smarter, its creators claim.

Even more startling, the updated version of AlphaGo is entirely self-taught — a major step towards the rise of machines that achieve superhuman abilities “with no human input”, they reported in the science journal Nature.

Dubbed AlphaGo Zero, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) system learnt by itself, within days, to master the ancient Chinese board game known as “Go” — said to be the most complex two-person challenge ever invented.

Does Artificial Intelligence Need More Innate Machinery?

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

Debate between Facebook’s head of Artificial Intelligence, Yann LeCun and Prof. Gary Marcus at New York University. The debate was moderated by Prof. David Chalmers and recorded Oct 5th, 2017.

A “nature-nurture” debate took place in the foundations of artificial intelligence. Advocates of deep learning, including Yann LeCun, held that to create advanced artificial intelligence systems, general mechanisms for learning from the environment would play the most important role.

Here’s How Pharma Is Using AI Deep Learning To Cure Aging

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, life extension, robotics/AI

LEF has access to blood tests from its customers who take the product. That means data should be available in less than a year. If it works, we can expect other DNN-developed geroprotectors.

In 2011, scientists made one of the most important discoveries in the history of AI development. They found that graphics processing units (GPUs) are far better at simulating biological learning than central processing units (CPUs).

Chinese and Chinese-American billionaires’ philanthropy rising at ‘astounding’ rate

Posted by in category: economics

That the surge in philanthropy is a natural consequence of the rapid wealth creation was a sentiment echoed by a number of the high-net-worth individuals speaking at the conference, including Ronnie Chan and John Long, founder and CEO of investment company Highridge Partners. China is now home to 609 billionaires, more than the 552 in the US.

Chinese entrepreneurs in China itself, Hong Kong and America are giving back to society in ways unheard of even a few years ago, with Ronnie and Gerald Chan and Li Ka-shing among the big donors.

Newly developed switch activates genes thousands of times better than nature

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, health

If scientists could precisely regulate gene expression, they could turn off the genes responsible for illness and disease and turn on those that enhance health and the immune system.

“This is why controlling gene expression is so fundamental,” said Northwestern University’s Julius Lucks. “Once you get a good handle on it, you can do anything.”

For Lucks, having a “good” handle on might be an understatement. He and his team have developed a powerful and versatile tool that achieves gene activation thousands of times better than nature.

NASA’s New Ion Thruster Engine Is Breaking Some Important Records

Posted by in categories: military, space travel

NASA’s new X3 thruster, which is being developed by researchers at the University of Michigan in collaboration with the agency and the US Air Force, has broken records in recent test. It’s hoped that the technology could be used to ferry humans to Mars.

The X3 is a type of Hall thruster, a design that uses a stream of ions to propel a spacecraft. Plasma is expelled to generate thrust, producing far greater speeds than are possible with chemical propulsion rockets, according to NASA.
