Materials science is helping to transform China into a high-tech economy
Posted by Derick Lee in categories: biotech/medical, economics, science
Itâs the kind of diverse, multidisciplinary community, Chinese scientists say, that is crucial to doing great research but is often lacking in labs. âThe goals of the Materials Genome Initiative in the States and in China are the same: to produce better materials more quickly that cost less. Itâs very important we collaborate with overseas scientists because the materials genome is a new topic. We need to figure out the best path together,â says Zhang.
Researchers are reaping the benefits of carefully built programmes and a surge in funding.

Women in Science Open House aims to inspire young girls in the STEM field
Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: science
The first Women in Science Open House aims to inspire young women in the STEM field.
Michelle Cash, program coordinator at the Sandy Creek Nature Center, the event has been something she has wanted to do for a long time. After speaking with an intern at the nature center, they realized now is the perfect time because of recent social movements and the increase of women in political power.
âI think this is a good time to recognize and start to make people aware that thereâs women out there doing really good stuff for science and has been doing stuff for science for a long, long time,â Cash said.

NUI Galway to Lead âŹ13 Million SFI Centre for Research Training in Genomics Data Science
Posted by Genevieve Klien in categories: biotech/medical, business, economics, food, genetics, health, science
NUI Galway will lead a new âŹ13 million SFI Centre for Research Training in Genomics Data Science. The new Centre will train a generation of 100 highly skilled PhD graduates to harness the collective potential of genomics and data science to have transformative scientific, economic and societal impacts.
Announced recently by Minister Heather Humphreys TD Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation, and Minister of State for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development, John Halligan TD and Science Foundation Ireland, the Centre will be led by NUI Galway and will involve partners from UCD, TCD, RCSI and UCC.
A genome is an organisms complete set of DNA or genetic material and it contains all of the information needed to build and maintain that organism. Genomics is the branch of science that studies genomes to see how they direct the growth and function of cells and organisms and it is a key area of fundamental science with real-world impacts in areas from human health to agriculture and food production. In recent years the field of genomics has undergone a revolution, driven by new technologies that generate data on an enormous scale. In order to make sense of the large and complex datasets arising from analysis of genomes, we require highly trained data scientists, who can turn this data into useful information that can increase scientific understanding and enable us to harness the power of genomics to drive innovation and create real-world solutions.

Deep Science AI joins Defendry to automatically detect crimes on camera
Posted by Genevieve Klien in categories: robotics/AI, science, security
Deep Science AI made its debut on stage at Disrupt NY 2017, showing in a live demo how its computer vision system could spot a gun or mask in CCTV footage, potentially alerting a store or security provider to an imminent crime. The company has now been acquired in a friendly merger with Defendry, which is looking to deploy the tech more widely.
Itâs a great example of a tech-focused company looking to get into the market, and a market-focused company looking for the right tech.
The idea was that if you have a chain of 20 stores, and 3 cameras at each store, and people can only reliably keep an eye on 8â10 feeds at a time, youâre looking at a significant personnel investment just to make sure those cameras arenât pointless. If instead you used Deep Science AIâs middle layer that highlighted shady situations like guns drawn, one person could conceivably keep an eye on hundreds of feeds. It was a good pitch, though they didnât take the cup that year.
