AI is universally bad at knowing when to chime in during a conversation: Researchers discover some of the root causes

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

Researchers at Tufts University have identified root causes for AI’s poor conversational timing.

When you have a conversation today, notice the natural points when the exchange leaves open the opportunity for the other person to chime in. If their timing is off, they might be taken as overly aggressive, too timid, or just plain awkward.

The back-and-forth is the social element to the exchange of information that occurs in a , and while humans do this naturally—with some exceptions—AI language systems are universally bad at it.

Google says “Enhanced protection” feature in Chrome now uses AI

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, security

Google has quietly updated the description of one of Chrome’s security features, “Enhanced protection,” to confirm that it will be powered by AI in a future release.

It’s unclear what has changed, but as spotted by Leo on X, Google is updating its Enhanced protection mode in Chrome’s Safe Browsing feature to include AI-powered protection.

This feature now uses AI to provide real-time protection against dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions.

What Is Quantum AI? Everything to Know About This Far-Out Twist

Posted by in categories: quantum physics, robotics/AI

Artificial intelligence has been infiltrating our daily workflows and routine tasks for while now. It may be AI working in the background, as with Gemini’s integration across Google products, or you may be engaging more directly with popular content generators such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Dall-E. Looming in the not-too-distant future are amped-up virtual assistants.

As if AI itself weren’t futuristic enough, now there’s a whole new leap forward on the horizon: quantum AI. It’s a fusion of artificial intelligence with unconventional and still largely experimental quantum computing into a super-fast and highly efficient technology. Quantum computers will be the muscles, while AI will be the brains.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the basics to help you better understand quantum AI.

Google Cloud upgrades AI infrastructure with Trillium TPU and Nvidia-powered VMs

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

Google Cloud recently announced a major upgrade to its AI infrastructure, introducing new hardware and software solutions designed to meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence workloads. The centerpiece of these changes is the release of Trillium, Google’s sixth-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU).

Compared to its predecessor, the TPU v5e, Trillium delivers over four times the training performance and up to three times the inference throughput. This improvement is accompanied by a 67% increase in energy efficiency.

The new TPU boasts impressive specifications, including double the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) capacity and Interchip Interconnect (ICI) bandwidth, making Trillium particularly well-suited for handling large language models like Gemma 2 and Llama, as well as compute-intensive inference tasks such as those required by diffusion models like Stable Diffusion XL.

Robots chisel out the future of sculpture as some artists embrace change and others push back

Posted by in categories: futurism, robotics/AI

Instead of the old-fashioned hammer and chisel, a 13-foot zinc alloy arm with a spinning, diamond-crusted finger is now used by some to cut marble. Robotor CEO Giacomo Massari says it’s ten times faster.

A fleet of marble-sculpting robots is carving out the future of the art world. It’s a move some artists see as cheating, but others are embracing the change.
