Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: futurism
LANGSTON, Okla. (AP) — A 3.0-magnitude earthquake has shaken parts of central Oklahoma.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was recorded at 1:50 p.m. Sunday about 9 miles (15 kilometers) north-northwest of Langston, which is about 43 miles (69 kilometers) north-northwest of Oklahoma City. The temblor was recorded at a depth of about 3 miles (5.5 kilometers).
No injuries or damage were reported. Geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0.

9 Traits of Successful Programmers That Kids Can Develop Now
Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: futurism
I don’t have kids. But there are lots of kids in my life. I’ve also worked closely with thousands of entry-level developers over the course of my 20 years in tech. Throughout my career I’ve been approached by parents looking for advice on how to encourage their kids to become software engineers. It is, after all, the #1 profession today, according to US News & World Report. It’s also a really fun job.
There’s a temptation to treat kids like Olympic hopefuls. Get them coding as soon as they can type! Craft an ascetic childhood of programming challenges and summer code camp! Surely, that will ensure their future success. Right?
Well, maybe.

Something unusual is happening with our planet’s magnetic field

What this means
“If we look at our best numerical simulations of a magnetic field reversal, this is the type of pattern we see right before a reversal,” says Dr. Tarduno. “We don’t know if the current [anomaly] will lead to a full reversal.” If the anomaly continues to grow, the patch in the outer core under Africa could be the trigger to a full pole reversal.
If we look at our best numerical simulations of a magnetic field reversal, this is the type of pattern we see right before a reversal.

Report: Thousands could die when earthquake hits metro
Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: futurism
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – It’s a staggering statistic.
Thousands of people are expected to be killed or somehow injured when a major earthquake hits, according to a newly released report. Depending on when a 9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) earthquake hits, the death toll and number of injured could reach into the “low tens of thousands.”
The newly released report was prepared for the Regional Disaster Preparedness Organization (RDPO).
