Dr. Patrick Hammer

Patrick Hammer, Ph.D. is an AI and AGI researcher and Postdoctoral Fellow at Digital Futures, Stockholm University, KTH, and RISE.

His position is hosted by the Division of Biological Psychology and is associated with the project Intelligence Through Reasoning which aims to enhance the autonomy of intelligent agents. Much of the work is being carried out within the Digital Futures research center that seeks to shape an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable society through digital transformation. The work is being conducted in collaboration between the Department of Psychology at Stockholm University and the Division of Computational Science and Technology at The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

His work at Digital Futures allows him to continue his research and to more closely work together with Dr. Robert Johansson (at SU) whom he already collaborated with during his Ph.D., and with Dr. Pawel Herman at KTH.

His main research interests include the Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System (NARS), specific implementation designs thereof, and improving its real-time reasoning & learning capabilities to enhance the autonomy of intelligent agents.

Among his goals is to replicate, in computer systems, key aspects of natural intelligence as showcased by higher-developed animals in their cognitive capacities and ability to improvise.

Previous works include research in temporal, procedural, and introspective reasoning, and the OpenNARS for Applications design and implementation. Watch `OpenNARS for Applications`: Architecture and Control.

Patrick earned his Ph.D. in 2021 from Temple University in Computer Science where he was a full-time research assistant of Pei Wang. His dissertation was Autonomy through real-time learning and OpenNARS for Applications. He earned his Master’s Degree of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science at the Technische Universität Graz.

In a recent paper, Patrick demonstrated new comparative reasoning abilities of NARS, a formal model of intelligence, which enables the asymmetric comparison of perceivable quantifiable attributes of objects using relations. These new abilities are implemented by extending NAL with additional inference rules. The new capabilities have been demonstrated in a bottle-picking experiment on a mobile robot running ONA, an implementation of NARS. Read Comparative Reasoning for Intelligent Agents.

Patrick is one of the Organizers of NARS Workshop 2023, held at the AGI 2023 Conference in Stockholm, Sweden. He is a member of the Temple AGI Team and OpenNARS Team and is an invited speaker to many International Conferences on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, including Annual AGI Society Conferences and the International Conference on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
