Professor Jim Caffey

Jim Caffey, Ed.D., is an Adjunct Professor/Instructor in the fields of Astronomy, Physical Sciences, and Teacher Education. Jim has taught every kind of science imaginable, except biology, for 25 years, and taught more than 120 online classes during the last 15 years. He graduated from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri in 2013 with his M.A. in Teaching in 2009 and his M.S. in Natural & Applied Science, Observational Astronomy, and Planetary Geology, in 2012. He earned his M.A. in Applied Meteorology at Mississippi State University in 2012 and earned his Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership in 2016 from Linwood University. He has completed additional graduate work in Stellar Astrophysics and Meteorology.

He was one of the first teachers to use video extensively in online classes, creating video lectures, discussions, and replacing some expensive textbooks with cheaper DVD lectures.

He started his career with NASA as a high school intern in the NASA Space Grant program. Today he is an NASA Graduate Fellow at Missouri State University. He currently serves NASA as an Ambassador to the Jet Propulsion Lab doing public outreach. He has worked on NASA-funded research and missions for more than 20 years in Astronomy and Space Science fields. His research interests are in astronomy education, eclipsing binary stars, comets, online education, meteorology, and the solar system.

He has an award-winning career in TV and Video Production. For 25 years, he has worked as a Television and Video Professional, working in all areas including Producer, Videographer, Editor, Writer, and Director. He owns Caffey Video Productions and formally provided video services to Drury University for live Basketball games, and to the Springfield Cardinals Minor League Baseball team. He has won six National and two International awards for video production work and has worked or freelanced for CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports, and local stations KY3 (NBC) and KOLR 10/KSFX (CBS/FOX). His production company specializes in live events, such as weddings, graduations, and sporting events, and also provides consumer editing services. View his SMS Pride Videos.

For 26 years, he has been an accomplished musician and percussionist. His music has taken him around the world, having performed in London, Paris, New York, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Washington, D.C. He was a 6-year member of the world famous 350-member Missouri State University PRIDE Marching Band. He was at the Grande Opening of Disneyland Paris in 1992, performing with the Temptations, The Four Tops, Gloria Estafan, Cher, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson. He performed at the MACY Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1991 and the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1996, all as the Lead Honor Band, and with music legends Louie Bellson, Doc Severson, Tito Puente, and Clark Terry.

He enjoys spending vacations in Las Vegas and hopes to live there someday. He currently lives in Springfield, Missouri, with his two furry sons, Mr. Man and Comet. (The Astronomer’s dog!)
