Professor Howard Federoff

Howard Federoff, MD, Ph.D., FAAAS is Professor of Neurology at UCI, College of Medicine where he was previously Dean of Medicine. He was also CEO of the UCI Health System and Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs.

Howard led alignment between both clinical expansion and the expansion of academic and research missions. He oversaw the creation of the Susan Samueli Institute for Integrative Health, the Medical Innovation Institute, and the Center for Precision and Population Health, and cofounded the Institute for Future Health.

Previously, he was EVP Health Sciences/Executive Dean at Georgetown University. There, he was adjunct professor of Neurology and Neuroscience and his research interests included gene therapy and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and prion diseases. He is a nationally renowned clinical and research leader and groundbreaking investigator for neurological disorders. His research led to a new gene therapeutic trial in Parkinson’s disease that helps predict the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

He holds a number of medical patents with other patents pending. His research has received support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Howard earned his PhD in Biochemistry in 1979 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Four years later, he earned his M.D. there in 1983 and did his internship, residency, and fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

He has published more than 250 peer reviewed and invited articles and serves on the editorial boards of five journals including Brain and Mind, Experimental Neurology, and Gene Therapy. Two of his important publications are Plasma phospholipids identify antecedent memory impairment in older adults and Using viral-mediated gene delivery to model Parkinson’s disease: do nonhuman primate investigations expand our understanding?. His focus of research are Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

Howard chaired the NIH RAC (Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee) and the GTRP (Gene Therapy Resource Program) for NHLBI, was President for ASNTR and President of ASENT (American Society for Experimental Neurotherapeutics), and chair of the AAHC Board. He cofounded several biotechnology companies. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Inventors.
